The decision to dismiss Kolkata batter Raghuvanshi under the ‘Obstructing the Field’ rule has sparked controversy. The incident took place in the fifth over of the innings. Raghuvanshi played a delivery from Prince Yadav towards mid-on and initially set off for a single. However, with Green at the non-striker’s end showing no interest in the run, the attempt was aborted, forcing Raghuvanshi to turn back towards the crease.
While returning, Raghuvanshi changed his running line and moved from the middle of the pitch towards the left side. At that moment, a throw from the fielder struck his legs. Mohammed Shami and Lucknow captain Rishabh Pant appealed immediately. The third umpire ruled that the batter had deliberately altered his path and obstructed the ball from reaching the wicketkeeper and therefore declared him out. The decision left Kolkata players stunned. Coach Abhishek Nayar was seen arguing with match officials, while Raghuvanshi also expressed his displeasure to the on-field umpires. As he walked back to the pavilion, he angrily threw his helmet and bat. Raghuvanshi thus became only the fourth batter in IPL history to be dismissed for ‘Obstructing the Field’, after Yusuf Pathan, Amit Mishra and Ravindra Jadeja.
