Mamata Banerjee Faces Protest Heat.. Stones Hurled at Her Car

Trinamool Congress chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced a tense situation on Sunday when protesters surrounded her car during a visit to Halisahar in North 24 Parganas district. She had gone to meet the family of a TMC worker who died in police custody on Saturday. Protesters reportedly shouted “thief” slogans and threw mud, stones and footwear at her convoy. Police formed a security cordon around her as the protesters blocked her route.

Mamata alleged that the lack of adequate security despite authorities being informed about her visit was part of a conspiracy. She said large stones were thrown at her car and claimed she could have suffered a fatal head injury. She also accused the police of protecting BJP supporters and alleged that Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari was running the state with the support of police and mafia forces. Mamata said she would file a case over the incident. Meanwhile, Suvendu Adhikari described the incident as a reflection of public anger and alleged that people called Mamata a thief because of alleged corruption during her rule. He denied any BJP involvement in the incident.
