The Madras High Court on Sunday conducted an urgent hearing on a petition filed by DMK candidate and former minister Periyakaruppan against the victory of TVK candidate Srinivasa Sethupathi, who won by a margin of just one vote. The court issued notices to the Election Commission of India, directing it to file an affidavit by Monday.
The dispute arose in the Tiruppattur constituency of Sivaganga district, where Srinivasa Sethupathi secured a narrow win over Periyakaruppan. Challenging the result, the DMK leader approached the court alleging discrepancies in the handling of postal ballots.
Periyakaruppan claimed that postal votes from the Sivaganga district’s Tiruppattur constituency were shifted to another Tiruppattur near Vellore. He requested the court to consider those votes as belonging to his constituency and sought a recount to ensure a fair result.
