The Supreme Court of India has reserved its verdict on a plea seeking compassionate death for 32-year-old Harish Rana, who has been in a coma for nearly 13 years. Hearing the petition filed by his parents, the apex court noted that doctors have certified there is no possibility of recovery and that the family sought a dignified end on humanitarian grounds. During the hearing, the court described the matter as extremely sensitive, observing that it could not casually use the term “euthanasia” and questioning who has the authority to decide matters of life and death.
The bench, while expressing anguish, clarified that it would examine the limited issue of withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment. Harish Rana, a Delhi resident, suffered a severe head injury after falling from a fourth-floor balcony at Chandigarh University on August 20, 2013, while pursuing engineering. Despite treatment at leading hospitals, his condition showed no improvement. After the Delhi High Court earlier rejected their plea in 2024, the parents approached the Supreme Court again with fresh medical reports. The court reviewed the reports, interacted with the parents on January 13, and subsequently reserved its judgment.
