A major encounter took place in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district on Thursday, dealing another significant blow to Maoist activities. According to police officials, 10 Maoists were killed during an intense exchange of fire in the Kiriburu police station limits. Security forces launched the operation based on intelligence inputs, leading to a prolonged gunfight in the forested region. Arms and ammunition were also recovered from the encounter site, officials said.
The encounter comes amid the Centre’s intensified crackdown under Operation Kagar, aimed at eliminating Maoism across the country by March 31 this year. Combing operations have been significantly stepped up in Maoist-affected states such as Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha. In recent months, several encounters have taken place, resulting in the elimination of top Maoist leaders, while hundreds have surrendered before authorities. Security forces have regained control over large areas, including the Dandakaranya region in Chhattisgarh. With senior Maoist leaders now weakened by age and dwindling support, the Centre continues to push forward with coordinated operations in forest and border regions to achieve its objective.
