Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said there is no need to fear job losses due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at a recent event, he noted that AI will primarily transform the nature of work rather than reduce employment opportunities. The minister emphasized that he has no concerns about AI negatively impacting jobs in India.
Drawing a parallel with the opportunities India gained during the Y2K phase in 2000, Goyal said emerging technologies will similarly open new business avenues for companies. Amid concerns about AI’s impact on India’s $315-billion IT industry employing around 6 million people, he asserted that AI will act as a powerful tool for improvement. He added that increased adoption of technology will drive greater demand for skilled talent, boost exports, and create fresh opportunities for over 2.3 million STEM graduates.
