Time-travel is one of the genres that has been explored only occasionally in Indian cinema. One of the most memorable examples is Aditya 369, starring Nandamuri Balakrishna and directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao. Released in the 1990s, the film experimented with a story spanning different periods and became a successful film.
Now, Mahesh Babu and SS Rajamouli’s upcoming global project Varanasi is reportedly set to explore a similar concept on a much larger scale. The makers have already confirmed that the film involves time travel. While the story is expected to feature the past and present, reports suggest that the narrative could also travel into the future, with sequences reportedly set in 2070 and beyond. If the reports are accurate, the film could showcase three different timelines. Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran are part of the cast, while SS Karthikeya and KL Narayana are producing the project. Varanasi is scheduled for a worldwide release on April 7, 2027.
