The skin plays an important role in protecting the body, and sweating is one of its normal functions. However, prolonged moisture, friction from clothing and poor air circulation can contribute to itching, redness and irritation, particularly around the underarms, groin and neck. Such symptoms are not always caused by sweat alone and may also be linked to conditions such as fungal infections or contact dermatitis.
Peppermint oil, derived from the peppermint plant, contains menthol and is sometimes used topically for its cooling sensation. However, there is limited evidence to establish it as a definite treatment for sweat-related itching or skin infections. Topical peppermint oil can also cause skin irritation or rashes in some people. It should therefore not be applied casually to broken or inflamed skin. If trying a new skincare product, dermatologists recommend testing it on a small area first, while persistent or worsening rashes should be evaluated by a dermatologist.
