Hip pain, also called coxalgia, can affect people of different age groups and may develop due to several reasons. Osteoarthritis is a common cause, while muscle strain, inflammation, injuries and problems related to the lower back or sacroiliac joint can also cause pain around the hip. Pain may be felt around the outer hip, buttocks, thighs or groin. Morning stiffness, difficulty climbing stairs or getting up from a chair, limping, weakness and clicking or catching sensations while walking can be warning signs.
Doctors may assess the condition through a physical examination and, when required, X-rays, MRI or ultrasound scans. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include rest, modifying exercise, physiotherapy, weight management and pain-relieving medicines. In severe cases, injections or surgery may be considered. Maintaining a healthy weight, stretching regularly, taking breaks from prolonged sitting and gradually increasing physical activity can help reduce strain on the hip. Ice packs may help with a recent injury or swelling, while heat packs may provide relief for older muscle-related pain. Properly cushioned footwear is also recommended during walking or running.
