Despite repeated awareness campaigns about cybercrime, people continue to fall victim to online investment and trading scams. In a recent incident in Hyderabad, a police constable working at Gachibowli Police Station allegedly lost ₹29.20 lakh after being deceived through a fake online trading platform. According to the report, a woman using the name Sukanya Reddy sent him a friend request on Facebook. After he accepted it, they began chatting regularly and later exchanged phone numbers to communicate through WhatsApp.
During their conversations, the woman reportedly introduced him to a trading application called Darwin X Global, claiming that it could generate high returns within a short period. Trusting her claims, the constable initially invested small amounts. As the application displayed profits and appeared to allow withdrawals, he continued transferring money in several instalments to different bank accounts, eventually investing ₹29.20 lakh. The app later showed a profit of ₹76 lakh. However, when he attempted to withdraw the amount, he was asked to pay another ₹12 lakh towards taxes, exchange charges and fund-release fees. Realising that he had been cheated, the constable approached the cybercrime police and lodged a complaint.
