Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions recorded strong growth during the first half of the current financial year. According to data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), around 145 billion, or 14,500 crore, UPI transactions were processed between April and September 2026. This marks a 27% increase compared with the 114 billion transactions recorded during the same period last year. In value terms, transactions rose by 20%, from ₹148 lakh crore to ₹177 lakh crore.
September also highlighted the growing scale of UPI usage in India. Although monthly transaction volumes declined slightly to 24.07 billion from 24.5 billion in August, the average number of transactions per day increased to around 80.2 crore, compared with 79.1 crore in August. The September decline was partly attributed to the month having 30 days compared with 31 in August. The figures underline the continued expansion of digital payments and UPI's growing role in everyday transactions across the country.
