India’s men’s and women’s hockey teams have reached the gold-medal finals at the Asian Games. After the women’s team defeated South Korea to book its place in the final, the men’s side edged past arch-rivals Pakistan 4-3 in a thrilling semifinal. India initially established a strong lead, but Pakistan fought back to level the score at 3-3. Abhishek then scored the decisive late goal to send India into the final. Harmanpreet Singh scored twice, while Sukhjeet Singh and Abhishek contributed one goal each.
The achievement also gives India an opportunity to have both its men’s and women’s hockey teams contest the gold medal at the same Asian Games edition. The men’s team will face the winner of the Malaysia-South Korea semifinal, while the women’s team will take on China in the final. India also added medals in archery and sailing, while the men’s cricket team has already booked its place in the final. The hockey title also carries significance for Olympic qualification, with the Asian Games men’s hockey champion earning a direct place at the Los Angeles Olympics.
