Makutam Movie Review: Vishal’s Action-Emotional Drama Fails to Impress

Story:
Krupa (Vishal) falls in love with Jamuna (Dushara Vijayan) and marries her. He leads a simple life with his wife and two children while working as a medical representative. Despite earning a limited salary, Krupa buys a BMW after telling a lie to his father-in-law. Later, he travels to Ooty with his family, where they are attacked. His wife and daughter are killed in the incident.

Why was an ordinary employee earning Rs. 25,000 a month targeted? What is the reason behind the attack? Who are Linga (Vishal) and Annapurna (Anjali), and what is their connection with Krupa? What twists does the story take in the end? The film revolves around these questions.

Plus Points:
Vishal delivers a strong performance and stands out in the action and emotional sequences. His performance is one of the major highlights of the film. Dushara Vijayan fits well into her role and performs effectively in key scenes. Anjali gives a convincing performance and brings good depth to her character, while her screen presence is also impressive. Thambi Ramaiah, Jayaprakash and the other supporting actors perform well in their respective roles.

Minus Points:
The film follows a somewhat routine treatment, and several scenes move at a slow pace. The screenplay could have been more engaging, especially in the second half, which feels stretched in places. The conflict between Vishal and the villains also lacks the expected impact.

Technical Departments:
Richard M. Nathan’s cinematography is one of the better aspects of the film. He captures the important sequences and action scenes effectively. The editing could have been tighter in a few places. G.V. Prakash Kumar’s songs are just okay, while the background score is impressive. Vishal does well in parts as both writer and director, while the production values are good.

Verdict:
Makutam, presented as a mass action and emotional drama, has a strong emotional core and good performances but does not fully utilize its potential. The slow narration and stretched second half affect the overall impact. However, Vishal, Dushara Vijayan and Anjali deliver good performances. Overall, the film may appeal to audiences looking for an action-emotional drama, but it does not make a strong impact.
