Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said Rahul Gandhi’s earlier warnings about alleged “vote theft” had now been vindicated. Speaking during the Congress protest over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Bhatti alleged that the deletion of citizens’ votes under the SIR process was a serious threat to democratic rights. He also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and said the Congress would continue its campaign to protect voting rights and the Constitution.
Congress leaders and workers held protests in Hyderabad as part of the party’s wider campaign against the Election Commission’s handling of the SIR exercise. Bhatti, who carried a copy of the Constitution during the protest, called on political parties and democratic groups to join the campaign. He later submitted a representation to the Election Commission along with TPCC president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud, ministers Duddilla Sridhar Babu and Ponnam Prabhakar, and former MP Mohammad Azharuddin. The Election Commission, however, has said that recent SIR related orders were taken with the approval of the full commission.
