Danam Verdict Raises Defection Debate: Bandi Sanjay

Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar said the Supreme Court’s decision upholding Danam Nagender’s disqualification is a setback for the political approach of both the Congress and BRS in Telangana. He alleged that leaders of the two parties should introspect over the issue of defections and said the verdict highlights the need to stop encouraging politicians to switch parties. The Supreme Court dismissed Nagender’s plea and upheld the Telangana High Court judgment disqualifying him under the anti-defection provisions.

Bandi Sanjay questioned the political practice of “Aaya Ram, Gaya Ram” and “Ghar Wapsi” and urged political parties to move away from what he described as opportunistic politics. He also said Congress and BRS should not encourage defections and claimed that neither party has the moral basis to contest the Khairatabad by-election. The Khairatabad Assembly seat was declared vacant by the Telangana High Court following Nagender’s disqualification.
