‘The Revolutionaries’ Now Streaming on OTT with a Freedom Struggle Backdrop

Set against the backdrop of British India before the First World War, ‘The Revolutionaries’ follows the struggles of young revolutionaries such as Rash Behari Bose, Bagha Jatin, Sachindranath Sanyal and Pratibha Lahiri. Their fight and sacrifices for India’s independence form the central theme of the series. Based on the Ghadar conspiracy, the eight-part series portrays events including the assassination attempt on Viceroy Lord Hardinge, Sachindranath Sanyal’s entry into the revolutionary movement, and his plans for an armed uprising alongside Bagha Jatin.

Directed by Nikkhil Advani, the series stands out for its large scale action sequences and striking visuals. However, the review notes that it does not fully deliver the emotional impact expected from a story about the sacrifices of freedom fighters. Jason Shah’s performance as General Dyer is particularly impressive, while Bhuvan Bam has been praised for his portrayal of Rash Behari Bose. Pratibha Ranta also makes an impact with her performance in some key scenes toward the end.

The series also touches upon Jugantar, the Ghadar movement formed overseas, Indian soldiers who attempted to revolt within the British Army, and individuals who secretly worked among the revolutionaries. It also depicts the execution of Kartar Singh Sarabha, who is regarded as an inspiration to Bhagat Singh. The series concludes with a childhood scene of Bhagat Singh planting guns. For viewers interested in learning about the generation of revolutionaries that came before Bhagat Singh and his contemporaries, the series offers an intriguing watch.
