Authorities have issued a strong warning against a surge in fraudulent advertisements promoting fake dating and video-calling apps on social media platforms. These ads, often featuring attractive AI-generated visuals, lure users with promises of casual conversations but are part of a well-planned cyber fraud network targeting individuals experiencing loneliness.
Once users install such apps through suspicious links, scammers gain access to their phone data, including contacts and gallery. Victims are then trapped through video calls, where explicit content is used to record and manipulate their images, leading to sextortion and blackmail. Officials urge the public to remain vigilant, avoid downloading unknown apps, and report such incidents immediately via the cybercrime helpline 1930 or the official portal.
