Rajamouli’s Global Strategy for Mahesh Babu’s Varanasi Is Different

Indian cinema is increasingly exploring different ways to reach audiences beyond the domestic market. Yash’s Toxic attempted to connect with international viewers by being shot directly in English as well, while Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana is reportedly using AI lip-sync technology to create an English version while retaining the actors’ original expressions and emotions.

Director S. S. Rajamouli is taking a different route with his upcoming project Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu. Instead of producing a separate English version, the film is expected to be released primarily in Telugu and screened internationally with English subtitles. The approach reflects the belief that a strong story and compelling visual spectacle can connect with audiences regardless of language. Varanasi is scheduled to release on April 7, 2027.
