Diabetes has become a major health concern affecting millions of people worldwide. Health experts emphasize that dietary habits play a crucial role in controlling blood sugar levels. In this context, papaya is being recommended as highly beneficial for people with diabetes. According to recent studies published in the Journal of Diabetes, Nutrition & Metabolic Disorders, compounds present in papaya such as Vitamin C, fiber, flavonoids and saponins have been found to effectively help reduce blood glucose levels.
While ripe papaya is commonly consumed, research suggests that raw papaya is more beneficial for diabetic patients compared to the ripe fruit. Raw papaya contains lower natural sugar levels and has a low glycemic index, which helps prevent sudden spikes in blood sugar and maintains stability. It is especially suitable for individuals with pre-diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Its high fiber content supports improved insulin sensitivity and ensures a slower release of glucose into the bloodstream. On the other hand, ripe papaya contains higher fructose levels, which may raise blood sugar quickly, so it should be consumed in controlled portions. According to gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi, even small dietary changes can significantly impact insulin levels. Therefore, including raw papaya in the form of curries or salads can be beneficial, but consulting a nutritionist is advised based on individual health conditions.
