Many people who wish to lose weight often find it difficult to follow strict dieting rules or maintain regular physical exercise. For such individuals, Samalu (foxtail millet) porridge serves as a simple and effective food option. Since samalu belongs to the millet family, it plays a significant role in weight management. This porridge not only helps in weight loss but also provides essential proteins required by the body. According to experts, there have been notable weight loss experiences reported by individuals who consumed samalu porridge consistently for 45 days.
The preparation of samalu porridge is also quite simple. Add an adequate amount of salt and cook it thoroughly. Cumin seeds can be added for taste and aroma. To enhance its nutritional value, vegetables such as carrot, beetroot, beans, green chilies and onions can be included. These vegetables can either be cooked along with the porridge or prepared separately and mixed later. Once the porridge is well cooked, coriander leaves must be added. Optionally, a small amount of ginger and finally some pepper powder can be mixed to prepare a hot and flavorful samalu porridge. Typically, the preparation takes about 10–12 minutes. Soaking the grains in advance can reduce the cooking time.
Those aiming for weight loss are advised to consume this samalu porridge before 7:30 PM at night. Having one bowl of porridge mixed with vegetables helps keep hunger away for a longer time. If needed, buttermilk can be consumed before going to bed. Additionally, consuming buttermilk, thin sambar or leftover home-cooked dishes before 7:30 PM can also support weight loss. In this way, samalu porridge not only aids in the weight loss process but also provides essential nutrients to the body.
