Doctors say there is no fixed number of bowel movements that defines a healthy digestive system. Some people may pass stool several times a day, while others may go once every day or two. According to Dr Shubham Vatsya, Director and Head of Gastro Sciences at ISIC Multispeciality Hospital, stool should generally be soft, well-formed and easy to pass, without significant pain or excessive straining. A feeling of complete bowel emptying is also an important indicator of healthy bowel function.
A sudden or persistent change in normal bowel habits can be more significant than frequency alone. Watery stools occurring three or more times a day, persistent constipation, abdominal pain, bloating, repeated straining or blood in the stool may require medical evaluation. Lifestyle factors such as diet, fibre intake, adequate fluids and regular physical activity can support bowel health. Doctors also advise against regularly using laxatives without medical guidance, particularly when bowel problems persist.
