Heavy monsoon rains have begun lashing Mumbai following the arrival of the southwest monsoon. Amid the worsening weather conditions, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde conducted an inspection of rain-affected areas, including Dadar, Hindmata, and Gandhi Market, on Wednesday morning. While reviewing the situation and interacting with officials, an unexpected incident occurred when a sanitation worker walking nearby accidentally fell into an open manhole hidden beneath rainwater.
The worker, later identified as a civic sanitation employee, was rescued immediately by staff accompanying the mayor. The incident sparked concern over public safety and drainage maintenance during the monsoon season. Reacting strongly, Mayor Ritu Tawde warned officials that negligence regarding open manholes would not be tolerated. Speaking to the media, she stated that warning signs had been placed around the manhole for cleaning work and urged citizens to remain alert and pay attention to safety notices. A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media.
