Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has made strong remarks on reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in local bodies, referring to the Supreme Court’s decision on the 34% quota. He said his government would strive to provide BCs with reservations exceeding 34% and ensure their representation in local governance. Naidu asserted that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has consistently supported backward communities. He alleged that the previous government reduced BC reservations to 24%, depriving 16,800 people of leadership opportunities in local bodies. He also accused the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) of opposing the proposed increase and approaching the court to challenge the move.
Naidu further alleged that the previous YSRCP government did not establish a BC commission. He said the NDA secured 57% of the votes in the last elections, with BC communities providing strong support. He also criticized arguments against holding local body elections until the electoral roll process was completed. Declaring that he would pursue a more assertive approach, Naidu said his government would overcome obstacles and work towards victory in the upcoming local body elections. He expressed confidence that success in these polls would help accelerate the implementation of government programmes.
