Offering fruits and coconuts to deities is a common practice in Hindu spiritual traditions. According to religious beliefs, Puranic traditions and spiritual interpretations, the offering is not merely a ritual performed to seek the fulfilment of wishes. Just as nature endures various challenges before producing fruits and offers them to the world, devotees are encouraged to recognise that what they receive in life is a blessing and express gratitude by offering it to the divine. The practice is also associated with letting go of the ego attached to one’s achievements and possessions.
The devotional philosophy reflected in the Bhagavad Gita places greater emphasis on sincere devotion and the purity of one’s intention than on the material value of an offering. Devotees believe that when a fruit is offered with humility and genuine devotion, it becomes sacred prasadam. The tradition is therefore seen as a way of cultivating humility, gratitude and selflessness. These interpretations are based on Hindu religious beliefs, Puranic traditions and spiritual practices and should be understood as matters of faith.
