The Supreme Court has indicated that it will not impose a complete ban on firecrackers ahead of Diwali, while also making it clear that their unrestricted use throughout the day will not be permitted. A bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and P.B. Varale said a balanced approach was needed, considering both public sentiment and the impact of fireworks on air quality and the environment.
The court indicated that specific types of permissible firecrackers and designated time slots could be prescribed. It particularly highlighted the impact of prolonged firecracker use on children, elderly people and those suffering from illnesses. The court is also awaiting further assessment on barium-containing crackers before deciding on the categories that may be permitted.
