Supreme Court Mutes Hearing in Noida DM’s Plea Over Student’s NSA Detention

The Supreme Court on Wednesday muted the audio and closed virtual-court access during the hearing of a plea filed by Gautam Buddh Nagar District Magistrate Medha Roopam against an Allahabad High Court order in the National Security Act (NSA) detention case involving Delhi University student Akriti Chaudhary. The High Court had quashed Chaudhary’s NSA detention in connection with the April 2026 Noida workers’ protest and directed ₹5 lakh compensation, to be recovered from the salaries of officials including the District Magistrate. The Supreme Court subsequently reserved its order on Roopam’s plea.

Roopam challenged the High Court’s directions, including the recovery of compensation from her salary and adverse observations concerning her role in the detention. The Supreme Court later stayed the operation of key portions of the High Court order, including the compensation direction, and posted the matter for further hearing on October 7.
