A political controversy has erupted in Punjab following serious corruption allegations against Gurpreet Kaur, wife of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. A former judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has alleged that Kaur demanded ₹5 crore to suppress a rape case.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), after taking note of a complaint regarding the allegations, has directed the Punjab Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to conduct an inquiry and submit a report within two weeks, according to officials. The development has intensified political attention around the allegations.
Gurpreet Kaur has rejected the accusations and issued a legal notice to the former judge, demanding a response within 24 hours over what she described as false allegations. The controversy has also triggered reactions from political parties. Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh has demanded that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann personally clarify the allegations, citing their seriousness.
