A tragic situation unfolded in the family of Kakroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Deepke, whose grandmother passed away due to age related causes on Saturday morning in Santuk Pimpri village of Maharashtra’s Hingoli district. Deepke had travelled from Mumbai to Delhi to participate in a protest at Jantar Mantar against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged vote theft. He was detained by police upon arrival in the national capital and was informed about his grandmother’s death afterward. Police reportedly offered to help arrange his travel to Maharashtra, including by air, so he could attend the funeral. However, they said the decision to leave and attend the last rites or remain in custody and continue the protest was his to make.
Deepke was travelling with Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das when police detained them on arrival in Delhi, while they were still on the aircraft. His parents, who were reportedly in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, objected to the detention. His mother, Anita Deepke, questioned the decision to detain him before he had even disembarked, while his father, Bhagwanrao, expressed full support for the party’s protest. The CJP had called for demonstrations alleging irregularities in the Election Commission’s SIR process and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Police detained hundreds of party supporters and activists, including former chief ministers from four states, during the protests in Delhi.
