Nikki Haley Criticises Trump Administration Over Putin’s G20 Invitation

The Trump administration has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 Summit scheduled to be held in Miami in December. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the invitation after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Rubio said the summit could provide an opportunity for Putin to engage with US President Donald Trump and other world leaders.

The invitation has drawn criticism from former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley. In a post on X, Haley described the decision as irresponsible and cited Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, its support for Iran and what she characterised as continued threats to NATO allies. These are Haley’s stated reasons for opposing the invitation. The Kremlin has said it appreciates the invitation and will consider it through diplomatic channels, but no decision on Putin’s attendance has been announced.
