Telangana government has issued orders revising the names of several Backward Classes communities by adding respectful alternative terms. The decision was taken after concerns were raised that some caste names were being used in a derogatory manner, causing mental distress and discrimination, especially among students and employees. The changes were made based on recommendations from the Backward Classes Commission and decisions taken during the state cabinet meeting.
As part of the revisions, the caste name “Dommara” has been changed to “Gada Vamshiya,” while the term “Pichiguntla” has been completely removed, retaining only “Vamsha Raj”. The government also added “Shiva Kshatriya” as an alternative term for “Budabukkala”. In another change, “Dhobi” has been added as a synonym for “Rajaka” and “Chakali,” while the term “Vannar” has been removed from the list.
Similarly, the entry “Veeramushti” has been revised as “Veerabhadriya,” and the names “Mera,” “Meru,” and “Chippollu” have been grouped together. The term “Shudra Caste” has also been removed from the description of the “Tammali” community. The government directed district collectors and revenue officials to issue new caste certificates using the revised names.
