An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region on Thursday morning, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred at 6:59 am IST, with its epicentre located at 36.05 degrees north latitude and 68.87 degrees east longitude. The earthquake originated at a depth of 125 kilometres and was located around 165 kilometres from the Afghan capital Kabul. No casualties or property damage were reported.
The Hindu Kush region is among the seismically active areas surrounding Afghanistan and Pakistan. The region has experienced several earthquakes in recent years, which have been recorded by international and regional seismological agencies. Afghanistan is particularly vulnerable to earthquakes because it lies in one of the world’s active seismic zones, making tremors relatively frequent in the region.
