The central government is reportedly exploring multiple formulas for the delimitation exercise, which includes a possible 50% increase in Lok Sabha seats. Southern states have expressed concern that population-based seat allocation would lead to injustice, prompting the Centre to reconsider its approach.
After an earlier constitutional amendment bill failed due to opposition resistance, the NDA government is now planning a stronger proposal. One of the key options under review is using the 1971 census to maintain inter-state seat ratios while redrawing constituencies based on the 2011 census. With the NDA currently holding over 300 seats, it requires around 360 votes to secure a two-thirds majority for the bill.
