Anna University: 24 Engineering Colleges Record Zero Passes Over Four Years

An analysis of Anna University examination records has raised concerns over the academic performance of 24 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. Between the November–December 2021 and November–December 2025 examination cycles, 2,425 students from these institutions appeared for semester examinations, but none cleared even a single subject, according to the reported university data. Semester examinations are generally conducted twice a year.

The issue has also drawn attention to colleges with very low student intake. Tamil Nadu has 418 engineering colleges with a sanctioned capacity of 2,53,806 seats, while around 1,99,775 seats were filled during the 2026 counselling process. Only 35 colleges achieved full admissions, whereas 24 recorded enrolment below 10%; 15 of them had only single-digit admissions. Academics have called for a review of institutions with consistently poor results and low intake. Anna University Registrar Prof. Dr. V. Kumaresan said the university would examine the relevant data and take appropriate action based on its findings.
