An allegation involving Delhi Police ACP Vivek Bhagat has triggered strong reactions after an independent woman journalist accused him of sexually harassing and physically assaulting her while she was covering protests in New Delhi. The journalist, identified as Rosie, alleged on social media that she was filming the detention of All India Students’ Association president Neha Bora at Jantar Mantar when the officer allegedly approached her from behind, touched her chest and pushed her forcefully. The allegations have not been independently established.
TMC MP Mahua Moitra reacted sharply to the allegations and criticised the officer over his alleged conduct while wearing a police uniform. She also used strong and controversial language in a social media post. The CJPA also demanded that a case be registered against the ACP. Meanwhile, the journalist and 16 other media personnel were reportedly detained again while covering the ongoing protests and taken to Delhi Cantonment Police Station. Police have acknowledged receiving three separate harassment complaints from women journalists and transferred the matter to the Delhi Crime Branch for a preliminary inquiry. Activists and independent journalists continued their protest outside Parliament Street Police Station, demanding action against the officer.
