Indian stock markets witnessed a sharp sell-off on Thursday, with benchmark indices coming under significant pressure. The Sensex fell more than 800 points, while the Nifty 50 slipped below the 22,350 mark. The decline wiped out nearly ₹8 lakh crore from the market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies. Auto, metal and other major sectors faced selling pressure, while a few banking and IT stocks managed to trade higher. According to market reports, foreign investor outflows and elevated US Treasury yields were among the key factors weighing on sentiment.
Foreign portfolio investors sold shares worth more than ₹10,148 crore on September 30, extending their selling streak. Rising US Treasury yields have also increased pressure on emerging-market equities, while weakness in the rupee and elevated crude prices added to investor concerns. The US 10-year Treasury yield climbed above 5.3%, reaching a multi-year high. The combination of sustained foreign outflows, higher global borrowing costs and sector-specific selling intensified volatility in the domestic market.
