India's AI connectivity with Southeast Asian nations is set to receive a major boost through a new undersea cable project. Lightstorm has announced a 3,600 km submarine cable system, named I-2C, connecting Singapore, Malaysia, Machilipatnam, and Chennai. The company has partnered with Microsoft, Singtel, and Tata Communications for the project.
According to Lightstorm Group CEO and MD Amajit Gupta, the project is expected to be completed by December 2029. The submarine cable will significantly improve data transmission speeds and reduce latency between AI and hyperscale data centres in Hyderabad, Chennai, Singapore, and Malaysia.
The new digital corridor will enable faster and more reliable AI connectivity across the region. Lightstorm said the project will strengthen cross border digital infrastructure and support the growing demand for high speed data transfer between India and Southeast Asia.
