Amazon has announced another round of layoffs, cutting around 1,000 jobs across its global retail business. Employees in India, the US, the UK and several other countries have been affected by the latest workforce reduction. An Amazon spokesperson said the layoffs are aimed at reducing costs and enabling the company to operate faster and more efficiently in line with its future business priorities.
The latest cuts have largely affected Amazon Stores’ retail operations, including customer service, marketplace support and retail engineering teams. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos also commented on the layoffs, saying the company had hired more employees than necessary during the Covid-19 pandemic when a surge in online orders led to increased demand. Amazon had already eliminated 14,000 jobs toward the end of 2025 and another 16,000 in January 2026, taking the total workforce reduction to around 30,000 before the latest cuts. The announcement comes as Amazon’s Great Indian Festival sale begins in India, with discounts across smartphones, home appliances and smart TVs.
