Samsung is preparing to expand its foldable smartphone portfolio with the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, a passport-style foldable expected to debut at the company's Galaxy Unpacked event in London. The new model is designed with a wider aspect ratio to offer a more immersive experience for watching videos, reading, browsing, and multitasking. Industry experts believe Samsung aims to make the wide foldable design mainstream in key markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and India while strengthening its position against competitors including Huawei and Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone.
Despite global smartphone demand remaining weak and memory chip prices rising due to the AI boom, Samsung is continuing its push into the ultra-premium segment. Analysts say foldable smartphones command significantly higher average selling prices, making them an important source of revenue despite their niche market share. Samsung is also expected to unveil new smartwatches and smart glasses alongside the foldable lineup. Experts believe the wider foldable design could become the next major trend in the smartphone industry, although its higher price and larger form factor may limit its appeal to premium consumers.
