OpenAI is preparing to launch its popular Sora app on Android, expanding access to one of its most exciting AI video tools. After making waves on iOS, Sora quickly became a global hit, letting users create AI-generated videos featuring themselves and share them on a global social feed. It’s also currently the only platform where users without a ChatGPT subscription can experience OpenAI’s Sora 2 video model, which has wowed creators for its lifelike visuals and seamless storytelling capabilities.According to Bill Peebles, Head of Sora at OpenAI, the Android release is “coming soon,” suggesting the app could arrive in the next few weeks. Early signs of the rollout have already appeared — Android Authority spotted Sora’s Play Store listing, currently open for pre-registration in select regions, though India isn’t included yet.
Just like its iOS debut, the Android version may start as invite-only, requiring users to enter a code to gain access. Despite such restrictions, Sora’s iOS version hit 1 million downloads in just five days, even faster than ChatGPT’s original launch.OpenAI is also working on new features to make Sora more social and creative. The upcoming stitching tool will let users combine multiple video clips into longer edits, while an upgrade to the Cameo feature will allow users to include pets, objects, or Sora-generated characters in their videos.Additionally, the company plans to move beyond a single global feed by introducing community channels — spaces for universities, sports clubs, companies, and other groups to share AI video content.
With these updates, OpenAI aims to turn Sora into more than a video generator — a creative social space powered by AI.
