OpenAI has confirmed that advertisements are coming to ChatGPT. The San Francisco-based AI company announced it will soon start testing ads on its chatbot platform, initially in the US, with a global rollout expected after testing. This follows CEO Sam Altman’s recent “code red” announcement, pausing non-ChatGPT projects.
OpenAI stated that ads will be tested in the free and Go tiers, while ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Business subscribers will not see ads. The company emphasized four key principles: ChatGPT responses will not be influenced by ads, ads will be separate and clearly labeled, user conversations will not be shared with advertisers, and users control how their data is used. Personalized ads may use non-conversational data, but users can disable or clear this at any time.
Ads will aim to be informative, entertaining, and conversational. Small businesses may also create AI-led experiences when users interact with ads. OpenAI noted that ad formats, eligible tiers, and presentation may change during testing. A potential ad-free subscription tier is also under consideration.
