OpenAI has abruptly shut down its AI video tool Sora, surprising even its partner Walt Disney Co.. The decision came just 30 minutes after a meeting between the two companies, leaving the Disney team shocked. The announcement was made publicly the next day, marking a sudden shift in OpenAI’s strategy.
The shutdown also ends a major $1 billion deal between OpenAI and Disney, which included a three-year partnership involving investment and the use of Disney’s iconic characters in AI-generated videos. However, the agreement was never finalized, and no money was exchanged. The decision was reportedly influenced by the high computational costs of running the video tool, which limited resources for other projects.
OpenAI is now focusing on more profitable areas such as coding tools, enterprise solutions, robotics, and artificial general intelligence. The company is restructuring its operations and integrating features into a single platform. Meanwhile, competition is increasing, with companies like Anthropic gaining momentum through coding-focused AI tools, putting pressure on OpenAI to adapt quickly.
