Meta has announced the withdrawal of its advanced AI image generator ‘Muse Image’ following growing concerns over the creation of fake images using Instagram photos. Developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs, this tool marked the company’s first media generation model. However, users raised serious issues regarding data privacy, image scraping, and lack of proper consent, prompting the company to reconsider its rollout.
The controversy stems from a feature that allowed users to generate AI images using photos from public Instagram accounts. This raised fears that individuals’ faces could appear in AI-generated content without their permission. Although Meta assured that such images would carry AI-generated watermarks, concerns over misuse and privacy violations led to widespread criticism. Eventually, Meta decided to withdraw the tool on Saturday.
