Microsoft Reassesses AI Coding Costs as Enterprise Token Expenses Surge

Microsoft is reportedly reducing internal access to Anthropic’s Claude Code and encouraging teams to use GitHub Copilot CLI instead, amid concerns over rapidly increasing AI token costs. According to reports, the company found that large-scale use of advanced AI coding agents was generating extremely high compute expenses across enterprise workflows. Ironically, several engineers reportedly preferred Claude Code over Microsoft’s own tools because of its stronger performance in real-world coding tasks.

The development has reignited discussions around the actual economics of AI replacing software engineers. Industry experts note that while AI coding assistants can significantly improve productivity, enterprise-scale token billing and infrastructure costs can become enormous with heavy usage.
