Meta has introduced Muse Image, a new AI-powered image generation tool developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs, expanding its growing portfolio of artificial intelligence products. Available for free through the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories and WhatsApp, the tool enables users to generate images from text prompts, create stylised artwork and edit photos using AI-powered features. Meta has also showcased its integration with advertising and commerce services, allowing users to visualise products such as furniture in their homes through AI-generated mock-ups.
Despite its advanced capabilities, Muse Image has drawn criticism over privacy concerns. The feature allows users to create AI-generated images using photos from another person's public Instagram account simply by tagging their profile. Critics argue that this could enable the use of personal images without explicit consent, especially since users are not notified when their public photos are used. While Meta says users can opt out through privacy settings and maintains that they retain control over their content, privacy advocates have questioned why the feature is enabled by default. Meta also confirmed that an AI-powered video generation tool, Muse Video, is currently under development.
