A major disruption at Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Monday caused widespread outages across the internet, temporarily bringing down several major platforms including ChatGPT, Alexa, Snapchat, Fortnite, Canva, and Perplexity. The issue originated in AWS’s US-EAST-1 region, one of its most critical data centers, leading to increased error rates and delays across multiple online services.Amazon confirmed it was investigating the problem and working to restore services. By around 5:27 a.m. ET, the company reported “significant signs of recovery,” though some systems were still processing backlogged requests.
Several users on Reddit and X (Twitter) shared that Alexa devices had stopped responding, while developers reported issues on AWS-powered applications such as McDonald’s app, Airtable, and Epic Games Store. This incident adds to a list of previous AWS regional outages — similar disruptions occurred in 2020, 2021, and 2023, each affecting a large portion of the internet that relies on AWS infrastructure.
