OpenAI and Jony Ive’s AI hardware project, long teased but never detailed, is reportedly developing three devices, including an AI-powered pen. The project, codenamed Gumdrop, has reached the supply chain stage, with manufacturing initially planned in China by Luxshare but now shifted to Vietnam via Foxconn, with potential future production in the US.
Ive recently confirmed a prototype has been finalised and hinted it could hit the market within two years. The devices include a to-go audio device and a pen, although full functionalities remain undisclosed. CEO Sam Altman has described the AI device as potentially “the third core device on a desk after a MacBook Pro and iPhone.”
