Grok, xAI’s AI chatbot, has been temporarily suspended in Indonesia and Malaysia after widespread misuse. Users exploited the feature to generate sexually explicit, non-consensual images, prompting criticism from multiple countries, including the EU and India.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) stated that the ban follows repeated misuse to create pornographic and indecent content, including involving women and children. Despite notices issued on January 3 and 8 demanding protective measures, X only implemented user reporting mechanisms without addressing the AI’s deepfake risks.
Indonesia’s Communication and Digital Minister, Meutya Hafid, said the suspension aims to protect women, children and the public from AI-generated fake pornographic content. She described non-consensual sexual deepfakes as a serious violation of human rights, dignity and digital security and urged X to clarify the feature urgently.
