Elon Musk announced that the next major update for Grok, called Grok 4.20, will be released within a month. This upgraded version of the fourth-generation AI model is expected to deliver new capabilities and stronger performance. The model has already appeared secretly on the Alpha Arena platform, where it reportedly outperformed rival AI models by a wide margin. Since xAI released Grok 4.1 in November, this next update is set to become one of the company’s fastest rollouts.
Musk confirmed the timeline on X, saying, “Grok 4.20 is coming out in 3 or 4 weeks.” This means the model could launch in late December or early January. In Alpha Arena’s stock-trading simulation where models start with $10,000 and trade for two weeks Grok 4.20 joined the season 1.5 competition and beat all other models, including GPT-5.1 and Gemini 3 Pro. It generated a 12% profit, while Google and OpenAI models ended with losses. This performance suggests major improvements in reasoning ability and real-world data processing.
Meanwhile, Grok 4.1 Fast set a new record on OpenRouter with 1.16 trillion tokens processed in a week, surpassing usage of Claude 4.5 and Gemini 3 Pro. However, since OpenRouter is only a third-party API credit marketplace, this record may not fully reflect the true popularity of these AI models.
