Google has announced a big update to its Translate app by integrating advanced Gemini AI capabilities. With this upgrade, translations will become more accurate, natural, and closer to the real meaning of the original language. The improved translation quality is now being added not only to the Google Translate app but also to Google Search, helping users better understand phrases, idioms, slang, and local expressions instead of getting literal word-by-word translations.
Google also introduced a new beta feature for live speech-to-speech translation through headphones. Powered by Gemini AI, this feature can translate conversations in real time while maintaining the speaker’s tone, rhythm, and emphasis. Users can simply connect headphones to their Android device, open the Translate app, tap on “Live Translate,” and listen to instant translations. This will be useful for travel, international conversations, lectures, and even watching foreign-language content.
Currently, the Gemini-powered Translate update is rolling out in the US and India, supporting translations between English and nearly 20 languages including Hindi, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and German. The live headphone translation feature is available in beta on Android in the US, Mexico, and India, supporting over 70 languages. Google plans to expand this feature to more countries and iPhones in 2026.
