The OpenClaw project has reportedly crossed 300,000 GitHub stars, marking a major milestone for the open source AI agent community. At the same time, Google introduced Gemini Spark at Google I/O 2026, presenting it as a 24/7 AI agent capable of running tasks continuously in the background, even when user devices are turned off.
According to Google’s product details and reports from The Verge and Mashable, Gemini Spark operates on Google Cloud virtual machines and integrates deeply with Google Workspace apps such as Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Calendar. It also supports planned third party integrations through open standards, along with access to local files via the Gemini app.
Mashable reports that Google will begin rolling out Spark to AI Ultra subscribers in the United States next week. The system also includes an Agent Payments Protocol to control and limit automated transactions. Industry observers note that Spark represents a managed cloud-based approach to AI agents, in contrast to self-hosted projects like OpenClaw, highlighting a growing divide between convenience and user control.
